If your New Year’s resolution was to engage with your community, support local journalism, build a better neighborhood, or join a great community organization, The Southwester is seeking additions to its all-volunteer staff.
Since 1963, The Southwester has been the voice of Southwest DC, documenting history as it happens from the point of view of our neighbors. The Southwester is the essence of local journalism, created by, for and with residents of the waterfront communities of Ward 6.

We are actively seeking applicants for the following positions:
Managing Editor. The selected applicant will manage our team of volunteer reporters, columnists and correspondents by assigning, editing and selecting stories for each month’s edition of The Southwester. The position is at the heart of our news coverage, with significant input on the stories covered. This is a part-time, volunteer position that requires approximately 10 hours a month.
Digital Content Editor. Expand our online footprint by creating and posting content to our website and social media channels. The selected applicant will have flexibility to be creative and try out new ways to connect with audiences and share content from The Southwester. This is a part-time, volunteer position that requires approximately 5 hours a month.
Reporters & Columnists. Contribute to our community newspaper and support local journalism! We are always open to pitches for news stories about local events, people, places and priorities. Reporters can focus on any topic relevant to Southwest DC and pitch ideas for news stories as frequently or infrequently as they like. Columnists focus on a single topic or area of interest (for example, our monthly Young Readers column) and, if selected, commit to monthly or bimonthly submissions for six months or more. These are volunteer positions.
