The Southwest Neighborhood Assembly (SWNA) announced the addition of Len Bechtel as a new board member. A longtime resident of Southwest DC, Bechtel also serves on the board of Waterfront Village, where he was the Executive Director from December 2019-December 2023. 

Bechtel previously held resource management positions in the federal government for more than 30 years, including serving as Chief Financial Officer and Director of Administration at the National Telecommunications and Information Association. He also served in senior leadership positions at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and as the Chief of Staff of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Wastewater Management. He received the Government Technology Leadership Award from Government Executive magazine. 

Bechtel began his federal career as a Presidential Management Intern after earning his Master of Public Administration degree from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Scranton. He continues to volunteer for Waterfront Village and other local organizations after his retirement and enjoys fitness activities and world travel. 

Founded in 1964, SWNA is a volunteer-driven civic nonprofit organization for near Southwest Washington, DC. SWNA works to built a better, more engaged community by publishing The Southwester, holding monthly community meetings, and running a robust scholarship program and issue focused task forces (Digital Empowerment, Education & Scholarship, Emergency Preparedness, SW Heritage (History), Technology, and SWNA Youth Activities).
