Aug. 21 was the first day of school at Amidon-Bowen. In a tradition begun by Ron McBee, members of the Southwest community were on hand to greet the students and hosted breakfast for the teachers and parents.
Food was donated by Potbelly of SW, the Edgewood Brookland Family Support Collaborative, and the Southwest BID. First District Police Commander Morgan Kane and others from the Metropolitan Police Department greeted children in the schoolyard, gave them school supplies, and brought McGruff the Crime Dog. The Washington Nationals sent President Abe, and DC United sent Talon.
Volunteers from Christ United Methodist Church helped serve breakfast along with their new pastor, Rev. Monica Raines, and the Southwest BID. PEPCO delivered backpacks for the kids.
