The Southwest Neighborhood Assembly’s (SWNA’s) newly-formed Tree Task Force and the Southwest BID are partnering with the DC Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) to water newly planted trees in Southwest. Over the fall and winter, UFA will plant almost 130 trees in Southwest. This past summer, approximately 20 trees in the median of M Street SW died because of the lack of rainfall. With a 250-gallon water tank, the BID’s street team will water each of the new trees once a week starting in spring 2016. The weekly watering should dramatically reduce tree mortality and expand the tree canopy across Southwest.
