It was an “A” performance for the cast of Akeelah and the Bee during Amidon-Bowen’s school outing to see the poignant play at Arena Stage. More than 150 Amidon-Bowen students saw real life on stage in a drama of doing well while trying to do good. Akeelah is an elementary school girl who has a gift for spelling. She is criticized for wasting her time on spelling and secretly joins peers at another school to practice. Along the way, she finds a mentor who helps her win the Spelling Bee. After the performance, several students met the actress who played Akeelah at the stage door and were able to speak with her. The outing was sponsored by the Amidon PTA and Youth Activities Task Force.
