The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial opened on Ohio Drive in the Southwest section of the Tidal Basin. The memorial opened to the public during the week of Aug. 21 to crowds and fanfare. The official dedication ceremony that was to be held August 28 was postponed due to Hurricane Irene.
The memorial covers space along the Tidal Basin across the water from the Jefferson Memorial. It includes various stone and water elements including three stone mountains, one including a large statue of Dr. King, a stone wall with quotes, and small waterfalls.
As of now the only entrance to the memorial is through a walkway from Independence Avenue, SW. Once the remainder of the construction materials are removed visitors will be able to walk from the Jefferson Memorial, through the FDR Memorial, to the new King Memorial.
