Lavenia Nesmith will recreate the gospel singing of the world’s most renowned gospel singer  in “A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson.”

Nesmith, with creative contributions by Julian Hipkins, brings Mahalia to life in a musical drama in dialogue and song.  Music is provided by Stephen Key on piano, Terron Whitehead on percussion, and and Harry Jackson on bass.

“A Tribute” is the dramatized collaboration between Nesmith and scriptwriter BeBe Ross Coker.  This powerful and heart-warming performance embraces the listening audience and brings into presence such memorable songs of praise as “Bless This House,” “Just A Closer Walk With Thee,” “If I Can Help Somebody,” “Precious Lord,” and many other tunes.

The concert is at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 17, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 400 I Street SW, and is a benefit for the Westminster Church Building Fund. A reception will follow.

Tickets are $25 and available by calling (202) 484-7700.
