On Aug. 30, in a collaborative effort between the Southwest Community Forum and the Omicron Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., a joint Southwest DC Community Day celebration was hosted at Lansburgh Park.

This outstanding community endeavor was an event meant for the entire family and community. There were a number of fun activities for young children including a moon bounce, rock climbing, a carousel, and horse back riding.

Members of Omicron Eta Lambda Chapter, which is committed to being a larger presence in Southwest DC, passed out donated school supplies for the children, performed voter registration, and served free refreshments to the participants who came to have a great time.

“It was a wonderful event that produced a lot of positive feedback,” said Thomas Davis, the president of the Omicron Eta Lambda Chapter. “Part of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s mission statement is to provide ‘service and advocacy for our communities’ and being part of events like this is what our chapter is all about.”

While each had held their own events in the past, this event marked the first time the two organizations collaborated to serve the community.
